{"id":11877,"date":"2012-10-24T16:46:39","date_gmt":"2012-10-24T21:46:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianrep.com\/blog\/?p=11877"},"modified":"2012-11-15T21:53:11","modified_gmt":"2012-11-16T03:53:11","slug":"11877","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianrep.com\/blog\/2012\/10\/24\/11877\/","title":{"rendered":"The Purpose Of Practice"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: 13px; font-weight: normal;\">What is the purpose of practice? \u00a0 Practice means you haven&#8217;t mastered something yet, but are working on it. \u00a0Here&#8217;s a simple definition from the dictionary,<\/span><\/h3>\n<address id=\"post-body-8230611416962433137\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ccffcc;\">Practice- \u00a0repeated performance or systematic exercise for the purpose of acquiring skill or proficiency.\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/christianrep.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/target-practice.gif\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-11878\" title=\"target-practice\" src=\"http:\/\/christianrep.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/target-practice.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"252\" height=\"237\" srcset=\"https:\/\/christianrep.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/target-practice.gif 252w, https:\/\/christianrep.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/target-practice-212x200.gif 212w, https:\/\/christianrep.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/target-practice-85x80.gif 85w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 252px) 100vw, 252px\" \/><\/a><\/address>\n<div>\n<p>It&#8217;s the work we do so it doesn&#8217;t look like it took any effort at all to do it. \u00a0It&#8217;s mastery of a skill. \u00a0Archers shoot hundreds of arrows at a target until they are able to hit the center with precision. \u00a0Gymnasts\u00a0practice hours each day to make impossible feats of\u00a0gymnastics seem effortless.<\/p>\n<p>Practice makes a hack at the piano a master musician who draws thousands to hear him play. \u00a0When we say, &#8220;I wish I could do that.&#8221; \u00a0He would reply, &#8220;You can if you practice eight hours a day for about 20 years.&#8221; \u00a0Practice. \u00a0It&#8217;s the disciple we use to master something and become proficient at it.<\/p>\n<p>My wife recently had surgery. \u00a0She didn&#8217;t look for a doctor who was new to this type of surgery. She looked for someone who had done thousands of them. \u00a0Why? \u00a0His practice had made him a master at this difficult procedure.<\/p>\n<p>You get the idea, don&#8217;t you, but I&#8217;m sure you&#8217;re wondering where I&#8217;m going with all this. \u00a0I&#8217;m setting the stage for these amazing and often overlooked words from Jesus,<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #ffcc99;\">\u201cBeware of practicing your righteousness before men\u00a0to be noticed by them; otherwise you have no reward with your Father who is in heaven.&#8221; \u00a0-Jesus, Matthew 6<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>What he didn&#8217;t say is &#8220;don&#8217;t practice&#8230;&#8221; \u00a0He said be careful how and where you practice. \u00a0Then, for the rest of the chapter he deals with the things he wants any disciple to master by practice- prayer, giving, fasting, etc. What we often miss in the words of Jesus is this- you will be practicing these things to master them, just be careful where and how you do it.<\/p>\n<p>Today some are revisiting the very idea of practice and it has many confused. \u00a0What this whole discussion is about is simply this- sanctification. \u00a0All of these things Jesus talks about in Matthew 6 are simply the disciplines of sanctification. \u00a0They are things we do to grow into Christlikeness. \u00a0And, clearly Jesus knew we needed practice so he gives us guidance to perfect our practice.<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s the goal? \u00a0Hebrews 10:14- \u00a0&#8220;He has made perfect forever those who are becoming holy.&#8221; \u00a0The goal of practice is to become like the one who has saved us. \u00a0It&#8217;s the practice of perfecting godliness (<em>2 Cor. 7:1)\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0and doing it intentionally that produces Christlikeness.* \u00a0Then, one day, after all your practice, you will hear these words, &#8220;Well done, good and faithful servant.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>*<em>A comment that will arise is this- &#8220;But what about the Holy Spirit&#8217;s work in us. You left that out.&#8221; \u00a0Yes, I left it out for brevity.
