As a speaker\/teacher I pray about each speaking event. A study on Biblical Servant hood would be my next teaching. After all I sign my correspondence, \u201cSaved to Serve\u201d. I began my study by looking up the word servant. I had to carefully read and re read the online concordance. \u201cDoes the word servant really mean slave?\u201d I checked many verses and found that in the word servant was used instead of slave. This made my skin crawl and the hair on the back of my neck stand on end. \u201cHow could this be Lord?\u201d Thoughts of the horrific treatment of slaves in America and elsewhere ran through my mind.\u00a0\u00a0 As I continued my study, God showed me what biblical slavery was all about. It may not be what you think. I am not a theologian. I cherish the Truth of the Word of God and make every effort to handle it correctly. This post only touches on some of the basic points. Servant<\/strong><\/p>\n Old Testament-\u201cebed\u201d Slave\/servant<\/p>\n New Testament- \u201cdoulos\u201d Slave<\/p>\n The Greek word \u201cdoulos\u201d is used many times in the New Testament. It is never interchangeable with the word servant in the original text. There are about 5 other words in the bible that mean servant and doulos is not one of them.<\/p>\n SLAVES IN BIBLICAL TIMES<\/strong><\/p>\n Slaves were common during Old Testament and New Testament times.\u00a0\u00a0 There were laws concerning the treatment of slaves.<\/p>\n Leviticus 25:43 \u201cYou shall not rule over him ruthlessly but shall fear your God.\u201d<\/p>\n Deuteronomy 15:12-14 \u201cIf your brother, a Hebrew man or a Hebrew woman, is sold to you, he shall serve you six years, and in the seventh year you shall let him go free from you. And when you let him go free from you, you shall not let him go empty-handed. You shall furnish him liberally out of your flock, out of your threshing floor, and out of your wine-press. As the LORD your God has blessed you, you shall give to him. \u201c<\/p>\n In the New Testament Jesus did not free the slaves. He gave instructions.<\/p>\n \u201cLet each one remain in the same calling in which he was called. Were you called while a slave? Do not be concerned about it; but if you can be made free, rather use it. For he who is called in the Lord while a slave is the Lord’s freedman. Likewise he who is called while free is Christ’s slave. You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of men. Brothers and sisters, each person, as responsible to God, should remain in the situation they were in when God called them. \u201d 1 Corinthians 7:20-24<\/p>\n \u201cServants, be submissive to your masters with all fear, not only to the good and gentle, but also to the harsh.\u201d God is over the master and he will deal with them if they are abusive.\u201d 1 Peter 2:18<\/p>\n JESUS THE ULTIMATE SERVANT<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cHave this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant (doulos), and being made in the likeness of men.\u201d Philippians 2:5-7<\/p>\n WHO\u2019S SLAVE ARE YOU?<\/strong><\/p>\n Romans 6:16- \u201cDo you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness?\u201d<\/p>\n Are you a slave to sin or a slave to righteousness?<\/p>\n My prayer is righteousness. No matter what, you are a slave.<\/p>\n God redeemed His children out of the pit of hell and brought them into His perfect light.<\/p>\n \u201cChrist redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us\u201d Galatians 3:13<\/p>\n He purchased us with His own blood. We belong to Him.<\/p>\n \u201cYou were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.\u201d 1 Corinthians 6:20<\/p>\n God adopted us.<\/p>\n \u201cThe Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, \u201cAbba, Father.\u201d Romans 8:15<\/p>\n Our relationship with God is multifaceted. Being His slave is just one.<\/p>\n My attitude has changed from this study. I used to wake up praying\u201d God bless my day.\u201d I set the agenda for my day and wanted God to bless it.\u00a0\u00a0 Now I wake up and ask, \u201cWhat adventure do you have for your servant (doulos) today, Lord?<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Cherrilynn Bisbano
